Public Benefit

Craigclowan in 2010/2011

An important part of school life is the contribution we make to the local and wider communities:
  • In 2010/11 we raised money or made other donations to a number of local, national and international charities.
  • Various groups used the school’s facilities including Perth Choral Society, cricket coaches qualifying for Cricket Scotland awards, Perthshire Hockey Club Juniors, a group of “senior” badminton players and Ski Excel which coaches local young skiers.
  • Five local students completed work experience at the school during 2010/11.
  • Many of the local elderly received food parcels from the WRVS as a result of our Harvest Festival collections.
  • Our Pre-School children performed for residents at a local old people’s home.
  • Our bid to be part of a Comenius project beginning in 2012, linking us with state schools in four European countries, was successful.
  • As an Eco-Schools Green Flag school we further developed our green credentials by installing utilities monitors in all school buildings to reduce wastage.
  • We planted 24 apple and pear trees in our Community Garden as part of the Orchard 800 scheme.
  • We employed over 70 local people and provided education to over 290 local children.
  • Wherever possible we used local produce for school meals and other local businesses for general supplies.
  • Facility maintenance was contracted to local businesses.
  • Our school uniform was available exclusively at a Perth business.
In the year 2010/11 there were many achievements of which the school was very proud.  Below is a selection that is by no means exhaustive.

Our pupils won 15 scholarships to their chosen senior schools, making a total of 64 in the last five years.  The school’s Common Entrance exam grades were once again of high quality and all final year students entered the senior school of their choice.

We had extraordinary success in national competitions with a pupil winning the National Galleries of Scotland Art Competition out of 3,000 entries and another winning the creative writing competition run by the same organisation for the second year running.  One of our entries also won the UK wide Fairtrade Tradecraft Snack Attack competition.  Two pupils won places at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music – a remarkable feat for two hugely talented musicians.

Two Primary 7 won top gold awards in the primary division of the Scottish Mathematical Challenge and in the UK Junior Maths Challenge we finished with 6 Golds.  Our Senior Choir won 2nd place in the Scottish National Song Competition, the Eco Committee ensured that we became the first Scottish Prep School to be awarded the Green Flag and two of our girls were accepted into the National Girls Training Choir.  At Perform in Perth we had over a hundred entries and came away with 27 third places, 19 seconds and 9 firsts.  In our English Speaking Board Exams, out of 38 entries we were rewarded with 13 Merits, 15 Merit Plus and 10 Distinctions.

On the hockey field, coached by two former Scotland internationals, our boys were unbeaten at the 11-a-side game, were runners up at the Strathallan 6 a sides and qualified for the National Finals at Millfield.  One boy recently attended the national U16 training weekend, despite only being 13, and he and two others represented Midlands at U14 level.

Our skiers were successful too with a student finishing 3rd in the Scottish Schools Minors Race and the boys and girls both finishing 2nd in their team events.  One of our pupils was re-selected for the National Swimming Squad as well as for the National Boys’ Choir, one of our girls was selected for the North of Scotland Tennis team and another for the Perth U21 Curling team that won promotion.

Just as important, though, has been the willingness of our pupils to participate in the wide range of activities on offer each week and enjoy, what truly is, an all-round education.

The Headmaster is an elected member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools, sitting on its Council as well as on the Governing Board of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools.  He is appointed by a board of governors consisting of past and present parents with a range of interests and professions.
