Form 4

Spring Term 2012

                                        January 2012
Dear Parents,
The children seem pleased to be back to school with their friends and ready for the new term.

The following information is a guide to the work to be introduced this term.

In Maths we begin with work on weight and fractions and then move on to money. In the second half of the term, the focus is on measure and symmetry. Mental arithmetic, problem solving and information handling will be practised regularly.

We continue to extend language through reading groups, regular spelling practice and several new grammar topics. Some of the creative writing and comprehension exercises are linked to our project work and we shall spend some of our language lessons enjoying and performing poetry.

Our Project this term is Rainforests, with a Rainforest Adventure planned for March !st at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. In Science we shall focus on Weather and Recycling with a visit to Friarton Recycling Centre on March 2nd.

Together with Perform in Perth, Bright Hour and hopefully some skiing, there are some busy weeks ahead!

If you have any concerns during the course of the term, please come into the classrooms or drop us an email.

With best wishes for the New Year,

Winter Term 2011

The information below is intended to answer any queries that you may have about your child starting Form 4.

Equipment
As in previous forms it is helpful if each child could bring a few pencils, a ruler, rubber, sharpener and some colouring pens or pencils. Clearly named gym shoes and an art apron or old shirt should be left in the classroom.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays games kit is required.
As with all uniform, please would you ensure that all items are clearly named.

Prep
In Form 4, about 30 minutes prep is set each evening. There will usually be spellings to write out and learn on Monday and Wednesday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there will be a maths prep, plus tables or number bonds to learn. At the weekend there will usually be a topic related prep to complete.

In addition to this the children have reading every day from a school reading scheme or their own library book. The children will have a reading record to be signed each day, with space for comments in either direction. On the days when reading is from a library book ,we would like the children to note the pages that they have read and again we would ask you to initial this to be sure that it is realistic.

We do appreciate the time and effort you give to hearing your child read and discussing the content. The value of this cannot be underestimated; understanding, fluency and expression all derive from regular practice. The children are welcome to borrow a library book from the classroom, or from the school library which is open every lunchtime.

Please would you check your child’s prep diary daily for prep details and any other general reminders.

Environmental Studies
This term our topic is Britain since 1930, where our focus will eventually be on the war years, in particular the Home Front. In Science, we will be studying Magnetism and The Senses. If you have any items at home relating to these topics we would be most grateful if your child could bring them in for our classroom displays.
If there are any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to pop in  to see us.
