Tatler Schools Guide 2013
With a dry ski run in its back garden, Perthshire's only day prep zooms past the competition when it comes to the slopes. But that's not all: the hockey, netball and water-polo teams are also unsurpassed, as are the match teas - 'the best on the circuit', according to head Andy Rathborne, who moved south this September to be deputy head of Fettes (his successor is Richard Evans, formerly head of Bromsgrove prep). Teaching is top-notch, with a record 19 scholarships this year - the art department has won a host of national awards and music is up there too. Thanks to the EU's Comenius programme, which links schools across Europe, Craigclowan pupils visit their counterparts in Spain, Italy, Poland and France. At home, juggling, puppet-making and mini-allotments keep those small hands busy.
