Summer Term 2008

SPRING TERM 2008
Winter Term 2007

19th March, 2008
Dear Parents,

This term, as always, saw the round of scholarship exams for some of our Form 7 children. With just nineteen of the year group leaving in the summer it was unlikely that there would be as many awards as we gained last year, but six children were successful and that represents a very healthy proportion. Mairi Hill started the ball rolling, winning an academic scholarship to Kilgraston and Cameron Montgomery was top of the academic scholars and won a Piping Exhibition at Glenalmond while Ross Davies and Annabel Flowers both won All-Rounder awards at the College. At Strathallan, Marcus Black won a Sports Scholarship and Martin Marshall became a Music Scholar. Well done to all of them, to those others who took the tests but narrowly missed out on awards and those who passed entrance exams to Dollar and the High School of Dundee. These achievements reflect the quality and breadth of the education on offer at the school and some of the following will reinforce this.

We had over 200 entries to “Perform in Perth” and the children did us proud in the Speech sections with over 45 gaining scores in the distinction category. Alexander Warren performed particularly well to win the Under 14 Bible Reading Quaich. Mollie MacLean, Liam Kirkpatrick and Sacha Taylor all won their vocal solo classes and our Middle and Junior Choirs won three trophies between them.

Strathallan Hockey 6s Tournament Winners
Our boys hockey players won the Strathallan Sixes outright for the first time in 28 years, beating Loretto 7-0 in the final, the under 11 netballers won the Ardvreck Tournament and the under 12s were placed third in the IAPS Northern Region qualifiers in Nottingham. The first few weeks of term brought great snow for the skiers but unfortunately all of the races have had to be cancelled. The Chess team retained the Fair City Trophy and our “A” team debaters reached the final of the Glenalmond Competition. There have been plenty more noteworthy events throughout the school: academic, cultural, sporting, green, fun and, as always, the website gives a very good account of these.
Throughout the year there has been a number of groups from the local community at the school after the children have gone home; cricketers, golfers, badminton players, skiers and hockey players have all benefited from use of the school’s facilities. The Sport Relief Mile on the last day of term will hopefully raise another tidy sum for charity and listening to the children’s conversations about what they will be wearing it should be a colourful and enjoyable event.

Thank you for your co-operation helping the new morning drop-off arrangements work smoothly and for your continued patience in the afternoon. While the car parks are still busy at this time, there seems to be less congestion and as a result the children’s safety and your waiting time has improved.

I am changing the format and timing of next term’s Sports Days. Forms 1 to 3 will have their sports on the afternoon of Friday 23rd May and I hope that as many parents as possible will be able to watch. Forms 4 – 7 will have their Sports on the final Saturday of term, 28th June, at 11.30am. All children in these year groups will compete on the day but there will be a new format to the events and I would ask that you keep this morning free of other commitments. It may also be a timely reminder that there will be Saturday morning games from 10 am until 12 noon for children in forms 5 – 7 next term and I expect all pupils to attend.

I hope that in the future there will be fewer requests from parents for their children to miss school during term time. The extension of next year’s Spring half-term to nine days will hopefully mean that there will be fewer school days lost this time in 2009 and I would hope that this will be the case in the Winter and Summer Terms, too.
