Spring Term 2007

WINTER TERM 2006

Summer Term 2006

  12th December, 2006
  Dear Parents,

I would like to begin by commending to you an author called Eric Jenson and two books of his. The first is “The Great Memory Book” (ISBN number: 1890460044) and the second “Learning With the Body in Mind” (ISBN number: 1890460079). Both are published by The Brain Store whose website is www.thebrainstore.com. In these books, and in a number of others, he encapsulates much of what, I think, we as a school, are trying to achieve. It is startling to see real brain scans which show the impact of exercise, team games, music and proper food not only on children’s health but also their intellectual achievements. His basic belief is that parents and schools CAN make a difference when it comes to maximizing our children’s potential just by the way we approach our recreational time and our food. They both make interesting reading!

Turning the “me into we” is, of course, one of our siren calls at Craigclowan and understanding that we all have a part to play in that process is also very important whether the “we” comes in the form of the rest of the class, a particular team, a music group, the school as a whole or indeed the family as a whole. I think it was Kipling who suggested that “the strength of the pack is the wolf but the strength of the wolf is the pack”! That notion is so true for the school. The numbers of you who support so many of the events in school are really important in the development of the children’s concept of the “we”. We could not do the very many things that we do without that support and for that I thank you all.

The Craigclowan Netball WOSPS

Form IV Egyptians

This term, the collective “we” has seen an excellent 1st XV which remains unbeaten in Scotland and very good U11 Rugby and Hockey groups. Stirling Fenton as Captain, Christopher King, Alasdair Wood, Charlie Hall and Ross Davies have all been selected for the Scottish Prep Schools Rugby team and Eleanor Kemp, Grania Lambert, Catriona Houston, Fern Whitelaw and Morgan Brown have been selected for the WOSPS Netball.

There have been outstanding performances from our musicians, our debaters and our dry slope skiers; in particular Hope Whitelaw won the Scottish U14 Dry Slope Ski Championship.

Alex and Andy Rathborne much enjoyed their visit to us towards the end of term. Meeting you all was certainly an ordeal in anticipation but not in reality! They went home tired but feeling that they had been made hugely welcome and even more inspired by the thought of coming to Craigclowan at the end of next term.

For my part, on the administrative level, I will be available for any appointments until 21 December, 2006 and again on 4 January, 2006. I am taking the ski group to Switzerland from 5 – 12 January, 2007 but Patrick will be available for appointments during the period immediately before and during the beginning of term. As usual, the only week that the office is closed completely during the course of the year is that between Christmas and New Year.
