Summer Term 2005

SPRING TERM 2005

Winter Term 2004

  23rd March, 2005
  Dear Parents,

I was sitting gathering my thoughts before writing this letter, reminding myself of the events of the term by looking at our website, www.craigclowan-school.co.uk A few seconds on the site is sufficient in itself to show just how much goes on in the school even though the term has been short.

I congratulate particularly those children who have participated with such success in ‘Perform in Perth’ this term and the debating teams, particularly Lauren McLaughlin and Olivia Strydom for winning the Glenalmond Cup. This is the eighth year in a row that Craigclowan have won that particular trophy. I congratulate the ski teams for winning the Scottish Prep Schools Boys and Girls Championships and coming 2nd in the British Boys and the British Girls. Cai Wardle and Hope Whitelaw are particularly to be commended for their performances in winning the Scottish Prep Schools Individual Championships and, in Cai’s case, the British Boys as well. Both boys and girls teams then went on to come 3rd in the Scottish Under 14 Minors Championships. Elizabeth McMorrine, Sophie Beamish, Alice Farrar, Vicky McLellan and Jenny Wood have been selected for the WOSPS representative hockey teams, and the girls Under 11 and Under 12 netball teams have qualified as the Scottish Regional winners of the IAPS netball competition and have represented Scotland in the National Finals held in Brighton. Lots of children have been involved in raising money for various charities during the course of this term with the Scripture Union being behind much of what takes place. The scholarship results are not to hand at writing, with the exception of Callum MacLean who has been awarded an All Rounder scholarship at Merchiston Castle School. More news of the others will come next term. Finally, I congratulate everyone who has mastered all of the elements this term and simply got to and from school each day!

F.IV visit to “Sensation”

Tayside Police visit Form I

We have experienced yet another inspection. On this occasion, it was the Care Commission revisiting the Pre-school, and I am delighted to report that they gave only praise and no recommendations for improvement. I suppose we are now becoming used to inspections, but I sincerely hope that after three excellent reports we can now be left alone for a little while to get on with the children. Thinking of the Pre-school leads me to available spaces in the main school for September this year. We are extremely full for this stage in the year and spaces are currently in short supply throughout the year groups so do let me know, as quickly as possible, if there is a requirement for a place in any class in the school.

Moving to next year, the building continues to be on schedule for completion in July. Thank you again to everyone for the patience shown in continuing the day-to-day running of the school whilst in the building site. As the internal work begins in earnest, the pace of progress will appear to slow but rest assured that July 16th remains the date for handover, leaving us just a month to complete all the work that will be needed to convert the main school building to its new uses, and to complete improvements and repairs scheduled for the kitchen and the entry hall to the middle school.

Famous Book Characters at the S.S.U World Book Day

Still thinking of 2005/06, I am going to undertake the role of Chairman of IAPS from September 1st. IAPS is the central body of the major prep schools in the United Kingdom and abroad, with a total of 600 members spread through the world. Some of you may remember that I did a similar task in 1994/95. The routine in school will remain exactly as it is at present, although I will be spending some time attending meetings most weeks and will advise you all closer to the time of those absences from school. Communication is easier now with e-mail and mobile ’phones but I will ask for a little patience in arranging appointments to see me if a request happens to coincide with me being away. Craigclowan does benefit hugely from being at the centre of an organisation like IAPS, simply by being at the cutting edge of new thinking and new ideas. This was certainly the case previously and I look forward to the community as a whole benefiting from the experiences of 2005/06. It does seem strange, however, that ten years ago e-mail was not in use and my mobile ‘phone was too big to fit in my pocket!

Debating Competition Winners

I will be available on Thursday and Friday this week if anyone should like an appointment to see me. After that, the office will be manned but Angela and I will be heading to New Zealand for two weeks. I will be back to work on Friday, April 15th and I look forward to seeing everyone back at the beginning of the new term.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Mike Beale
