SUMMER TERM 2006

Spring Term 2006

  7th July, 2006
  Dear Parents,

We live in exciting times! Before the new school year begins, three very important people in the background at Craigclowan will have retired. Chris and Dennis Rix have been with us 24 years, tending the grounds and looking after the cleaning and maintenance. Although Chris will remain in a part-time capacity, we wish them both well and welcome Donald Morran as Dennis’s replacement. We also welcome Leanie van Niekirk to the school office to replace Pat Cockburn, our school secretary who retires after 27 years of trying to look after me. In the Pre-School itself, Melanie Hill will join us to replace Tracey Stamp, who makes the short journey to Form One in the main school, whilst Steph McDermott will remain with us to cover the maternity leave of Elaine. I know that you will join with me in wishing Elaine well. Finally, on the subject of staff we are absolutely delighted that in April 2007 my role will be undertaken by Andy Rathborne. The Governors worked incredibly hard in choosing my successor and what a good job they have done. There will be opportunities for you to meet Andy, his wife Alex and their two boys in the next few months.

My term of office as Chairman of IAPS comes to an end in August. I am very grateful to everyone for the patience shown in supporting me during the course of the year. I have two remaining commitments next term, the first being in Brisbane in September and the second in Chicago in October. Those two trips reflect the many miles and visits to schools that have been made this year. I always return to Craigclowan appreciating even more the quality of the work undertaken on behalf of the children in the Pre-School. Those feelings are in no small part due to the teamwork that exists between the staff and parents. I am very grateful to everyone.

Finally, I have two matters of housekeeping.

Firstly, on the subject of fees, the Governors have fixed a fee of £160 per session next year. The Government Grant is increased to £356 per term. The Governors consider very carefully the levels of fees and have to take into account the pressure that comes from outside sources like salaries, pensions, energy costs and insurance costs. Each of these categories have involved significant change in the past year.

Secondly, I continue to have worries about some of the driving in the car park. Recently, there have been several close calls as drivers have been using their telephones. I urge everyone to always put our children first.

I am available for appointments the first two weeks of the holiday and by arrangement thereafter. Do drop in if you are passing, especially if you are moving to Form One next term. There will always be someone here between 9am and 3pm each day if you happen to drop in. For those entering school, the second hand uniform sale will be on Thursday, July 13th between 1 pm and 4 pm in the upstairs classroom of the Pre- School.

If we do not see you before, we wish you well in the summer and thank you so much for your part in making Craigclowan what it is.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Mike Beale
