FORM 5E - WINTER TERM 2010
September 2010

Dear Parent,

The first few days of term can be anxious times as everyone settles into the new routine of Form 5.
In order to answer some of your questions, the following information may be helpful.

Every day, if possible, your child should bring pencils, rubber, ruler, sharpener, coloured pencils or felt pens. A glue stick, named, is very useful, as is a small folder for Prep sheets. An old shirt or art overall is needed for some art lessons.

Games
Games kit will be needed on Mondays and Thursdays for Games lessons and on Wednesdays for Gym.
Please note that on Thursdays pick up will be at 5.00 p.m. due to Late Games.

French
For French lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, your child should bring a folder, a red pen and a blue or black pen.

Music
Instrumental Music lesson times are still to be allocated, if appropriate.

Prep
In Form 5, Prep, about 40 minutes, is set each night. This will include reading and spelling, with maths, language and project work as appropriate.
At the weekend, prep may be in the form of a finding-out activity, library reading and so on.
Initially, it is beneficial if reading is heard, and written preps are monitored for neatness. It is also
helpful for me, if you would write a brief note in the prep jotter of any difficulties that have arisen.
For the most part, preps should be a routine reinforcement of the work covered in class.

Mark Sheet
In Form 5, a Mark Sheet will be sent home twice per term. This gives some indication of the effort and progress shown during the preceding month. There are weekly tests on Friday to assess progress.

If you have any queries or worries during the course of the year, please do not hesitate to contact me.
It is always easier to tackle the children’s difficulties, in whatever form they present themselves, sooner rather than later.

I look forward to meeting you at some point during the course of the year.

Yours sincerely,

Veronica Elder

Dear Parent,
The first few days of term can be anxious times as everyone settles into the new routine of Form 5.
In order to answer some of your questions, the following information may be helpful.

Every day your child should bring a pencil, rubber, ruler, sharpener, coloured pencils or felt pens. A glue stick, named, is very useful, as is a small folder for Prep sheets, jotters, reading book and Prep diary. An old shirt or art overall is needed for some art lessons.

Individual Instrumental Music lesson times will commence on Monday 6th September. If you would like your child to start a musical instrument please contact Mr Olafsson directly.

Prep:
In Form 5, about 40 minutes of Prep is set for Monday-Thursday nights.
Monday: reading and written spelling activity. 5 minutes. of mental maths
Tuesday: reading, learn spelling orally and written maths activity. 5 minutes of mental maths.
Wednesday: reading, learn spelling orally and written language/topic work activity. 5 minutes of mental maths.
Thursday: reading, learn spelling and mental maths for Friday tests. Written maths activity.

Week-end: enjoy reading own library book, work on poem, topic work or class talk when appropriate. Written work is not always given on the Friday for the following Monday.
If pupils have a music lesson, they may be required to catch up on any work that is missed at home that evening.
It is beneficial if reading is heard, along with assistance in learning spelling and mental maths topics for the Friday tests. Written preps may also be monitored for neatness.

It is also helpful for me, if you would write a brief note in the homework diary of any difficulties that have arisen. For the most part, preps should be a routine reinforcement of the work covered in class. Please sign your initials in the homework diary once your child has completed their prep. Thank you.

Mark Sheet:
In Form 5, a Mark Sheet will be sent home twice per term. This gives some indication of the effort and progress shown during the preceding month. The first one will be sent home on Friday 1st October.

If you have any queries or worries during the course of the year, please do not hesitate to contact me. It is always easier to tackle the children’s difficulties, in whatever form they present themselves, sooner rather than later. Please use my school e-mail address to contact me or call into school on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoon at 3.30pm. This will avoid our staff meetings and late games nights.

An informal information afternoon will take place on Thursday 9th September at 3.30pm.
Parents’ Meetings will be on Tuesday 5th October from 3.30pm-5.30pm and Wednesday 6th October from 6pm-8.30pm.

Yours sincerely
