Form 8 - Geography Field Trip to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park

10 Feb 2011
Form 8 are learning about environmental issues and have been investigating land use conflicts in National Parks. On a beautiful day two National Park rangers gave a presentation to the children and then guided them around a loch-side trail at Balmaha. We then moved on to Loch Lomond Shores to have a close look at this typical National Park ‘honey pot’. The children should now be well prepared for the exam questions in this section of the paper after half-term!

U-13A Hockey v Cargilfield (A)

09 Feb 2011
Our boys travelled back to Peffermill last Wednesday to take on Cargilfield again. This time though it was at 11-a-side. From the push back we had a good attack down the right to give us an early chance but thereafter during a tough first half, our boys had to dig deep to repel the Cargilfield attacks. They did this very well though and as a unit they were all a part of superb defensive unit. In the second half, the boys came more into the game and Fintan scored a good goal from short corner right off of the training ground. With a few more chances coming our way, we could have won the game but Cargilfield scored with four minutes to go to level the game. Alexander in goal was a star but everyone played a massive part in this great team performance.

ESB Debating Competition (2nd Round)

09 Feb 2011
This was the last competitive debate of the year and Andrew and Fraser travelled to Morrison's to debate in the 2nd round of the E.S.D. Debating Competition for which they had qualified in style in January.

This second round was of an incredibly high standard, and of course, we faced much older opposition as all of the Morrison's ('A' and 'C' teams) and Strathallan competitors were S2, S3 or S4 pupils.
However, our young F.7 debaters were not overawed by their seniors and it was clear that they were prepared to take the rhetorical fight to the opposition, and so the debate on the motion "This house would abolish the state funding for the arts" was joined with Andrew and Fraser speaking last for the Proposition.

In the end, Strathallan and Morrison's 'A' were adjudged the winners but our two very young debaters impressed all with the clarity and passion of their arguments. This was a great finale to the 2010-2011 season of competitive debating and I would like to thank Captain Pierre Borderie and all the debaters for their hard work and dedication.

Cross-Country Training on Snow

09 Feb 2011
Following a recent snowfall on our school grounds, the after school cross-country training session gained the extra appeal of taking place in such sudden brightness. Everyone displayed great enthusiasm battling hard over a Paarlauf, a relay race in which each team member runs several of either a short or a long stretch, with a short jogged recovery. Yet another session which seemed to go far too quickly!

Activity Club - Patchworking

09 Feb 2011
Patchwork is just one of the many Wednesday activities taking place this term and the children are currently learning new patchwork skills to make up either a cushion or a bag. The design they are working on is called ‘Log Cabin’. They have selected their fabrics and cut these to size and are now working on tacking and machine sewing the pieces together. The cushions or bags will then be hand quilted to finish. Emma also brought in a wonderful patchwork cushion that she has worked on at home!

U-13 Hockey National Qualifiers

07 Feb 2011
The team travelled to Peffermill in Edinburgh last Monday to take part in the annual 7-a-side qualifiers. Unfortunately heavy snow and rain cut the event short with our boys having secured two wins from the two games played against Cargilfield and Belhaven. Ruairidh, our captain, scored 4 goals and led by example on the cold and very wintery day. The qualifying tournament will resume after half term.

Glenalmond Cup Debating Competition

06 Feb 2011
On Sunday 6th February, Craigclowan’s three debating teams travelled to Glenalmond College to take part in the 18th edition of the Glenalmond Cup Junior Debating Competition. Twenty teams debated the same motion simultaneously in five pools in the first round and then teams were re-distributed for another simultaneous round. The best 4 teams on points gained during the two rounds progressed to the Final. In round one, the motion was: “This House believes that Shakespeare has had his day” whereas in round two it was: “This House would scrap the NHS”

Our ‘A’ team qualified for the final in which they proposed the motion: “This House believes that University Education should be free to students”. Dollar 'C' were second proposition while St Mary's Melrose 'A' and Dollar 'E' were in opposition. Zoe and Eilidh summed up the case for free University Education with great clarity, aplomb and humour but, in the end, the judges decided that Dollar 'C' were this year's winners.

Many thanks to my colleagues Maureen Wright and Fabienne Thompson for all their hard work before and during the ‘Big Day’!

Family Art Morning

05 Feb 2011
We had another great morning at the Family Art Club on Saturday. Using a collection of tiles we worked up designs for a trivet and as usual everyone came up with different and original ideas. It was difficult to tell which part of the morning we enjoyed the most. From the designing and colour choice to smashing the tiles, which was done with great gusto, and finally gluing and placing them, it was an absorbing process from start to finish. We were fortified with the usual home baking and the beetroot chocolate brownies and chocolate chip cookies were especially popular!
We are planning another family art morning during this term when we’ll be showing you all how to produce hand made jewellery and key rings and we look forward to seeing you there.

Glenshee Skiing

05 Feb 2011
What a cracking day!! Thirty intrepid skiers headed off into the night for yet another Craigclowan ski day at Glenshee. The weather forecast was quite positive after a few very stormy days. The mountains did not disappoint with the sun making an appearance in the afternoon which was exceedingly pleasant. The snow was crispy and challenging, forcing all to use their edges to the best of their ability and the wind did not materialise as forecast. Excellent! Well done to all on yet another very successful day.

Form 1 - Chinese New Year

03 Feb 2011
Form 1 had a lovely afternoon on 3rd February as they celebrated Chinese New Year with Mrs Denny. Mrs Denny told us all about the celebrations and she even brought some delicious Chinese food for us to try.

Form 3S - French Topic

03 Feb 2011
Form 3S are doing a topic all about France this term. We are learning lots of facts and we are even going to write to some children in a school in Paris! On Thursday, Mrs Stronach brought in some croissants and we had them warmed up in the oven and then we put on some butter and jam.

In our classroom we have a French frog called Philippe. Most weeks he sends us letters to ask us to find out things. He has told us that he doesn’t want us to EVER EAT FROG’S LEGS! Philippe always hides his letters somewhere in the classroom and we have fun looking for them.

U-10 Boys Hockey v Belhaven Hill

02 Feb 2011
Fourteen boys played in their first game of the season on Wednesday. They looked fit and organised from the starting whistle. Skilful and determined play saw the “A” team record a 2-0 victory, with goals from John Stephen. The “B” team narrowly lost their game but all players are ready to improve on their performance, before selection for the next match. With the potential on display from all players, it should certainly be an exciting afternoon against Cargilfield on Wednesday 9th February. Very well played.

Science Morning

02 Feb 2011
On Wednesday morning the normal timetable was abandoned and the Junior and Middle Schools turned into a circus of Science! Every class from Forms 1 to 5 rotated through the classrooms for a huge variety of hands-on sessions! There was an incredible buzz around the school as children took part in a huge number of activities including making weather vanes (the perfect blustery day), building string telephones, investigating light, shadows and optical illusions, battling with fruit in water and even brushing their teeth! The activities and conclusions were plentiful and the list could go on forever! A super morning!

Merchiston Castle School Cross-Country Relays

01 Feb 2011
U-11 'A' wins the Merchiston Castle School Cross-Country Relays
Fourteen children travelled to Edinburgh to enjoy an afternoon of sportsmanship over a 1.3 km (0.81mile) fast and energy sapping cross-country course. At 2pm the U-11 race was underway with Robert LEADER guiding the field of 1st leg runners around the mostly flat but occasionally rising loop. The battle against his opponents from Belhaven and Merchiston was tight but Robert did not give in and passed the baton confidently onto Ben PORTER who did a splendid job of maintaining top position in spite of the pressure of the opposition, hot on his heels. Johnny ROBERTS was the ideal runner for the anchor leg, thus bringing his team home in first position, ahead of 16 others. Our 'B' Team (Rory OTTLEY, Kyle FLEMING and Thomas REYNOLDS) finished 8th and the 'C' Team (David SINCLAIR, Johnny BOYD and John STEPHEN) finished 13th.

Craigclowan’s U-13 runners also battled hard from the very first second. The 'A' Team (George MARLOW, Jamie MILLER and Fintan KIRKPATRICK) were placed 13th. Our 'B' team was incomplete but its two runners (Frankie HAY and Jack HOWIE) ran strongly and made the most of being able to compare their runs against anyone’s on the day. A convivial hot tea rounded off the cold, sunny and windy day before the heavens open, just before our journey back home.

Form 2 - Art Afternoon

01 Feb 2011
Penguins with Mrs Page
On Tuesday Form 2 were treated to an afternoon of expertise! Mrs Page our resident Art specialist invited the year group to venture into her Art Room and make some papier mache penguins! Check again next week and you will see how our bottles of flour have been turned into perfect penguins! Thank you, Mrs Page!

Lunchtime Music Concert

01 Feb 2011
On Monday we held one of our regular lunchtime music concerts which give the children an opportunity to perform in front of parents and friends alike. The concerts are always well supported and it is a wonderful interlude in the middle of our busy day. The children performed beautifully and it is a great pleasure to listen to their progression. Many thanks and a big well done to them all!

U-11 Craigclowan Hockey Tournament

29 Jan 2011
Craigclowan School U-11 Annual Boys Hockey Tournament
The school astro was buzzing throughout Saturday afternoon. A total of 7 teams entered into the tournament, with everyone playing each other. There was no room for error, with 2 points awarded for a victory and 1 for a draw. The “A” team played against Cargilfield in their first match and quickly realised that weak tackling and passing without looking up could cost them dearly. Other than the first 2 minutes of this game the boys started working as a team and used each other well. They recorded wins against Lathallan, Craigclowan “B” team, Riley and Fettes. Belhaven took their revenge after loosing on Wednesday. A 3rd place finish was about right for the afternoon, although we certainly aim to build on this before the National Qualifier on Monday 7th February. The “B” team put up a strong fight in all of their matches, learning with every game they played. Many of these players will be aiming for selection against Cargilfield in our next fixture on Wednesday 9th February. Very well played.

Thank you to the kitchen staff for putting on a tasty match tea for all players and delicious home baking for the parents and coaches. This is an important aspect of playing in a team at Craigclowan and we encourage everyone to be part of this.

Scripture Union - Lendrick Muir Weekend

29 Jan 2011
Ten members of our Explorers Group have just returned from a brilliant weekend at Lendrick Muir. The camp was attended by Scripture Union groups from independent schools all over Scotland and the children have made lots of new friends. Over the weekend they had the opportunity to try out a wide range of outdoor activities and challenges as well as having some time to think about living according to Christian values. These photos are just a tiny selection of the hundreds they brought back!

Skiing at Glenshee

29 Jan 2011
Another fantastic days skiing was had by all on Saturday. The morning was a bit yuk due to low cloud, but in the afternoon the sun came out and all was good in the world. It truly was an amazing few hours and it certainly allowed the legs to really get to work. Once again the instruction was excellent and the packed lunches continue to amaze. Thank you mums and dads for keeping your children so well fed on the hill. I really must improve my own lunch options. With new snow coming in this week, the season looks good to continue in preparation for the trip to France at the end of the term.

Form 2 - In the Garden

28 Jan 2011
Form 2 went back into the garden this afternoon to dig up the parsnips and leeks that they had planted last year. Mrs McCrae dug deep to get to the roots of the enormous parsnips, which would have graced any county show! The leeks were given a good shake and mud flew far and wide, much to the amusement of all. It was with a great sense of pride that the children filled the boxes with their home grown produce and we hope they and their parents enjoyed plenty of hearty soup from their wonderful vegetables!

Rua Fiola Lecture

28 Jan 2011
Mr. Torquil Johnson-Ferguson came to give his fantastic illustrated talk about Rua Fiola Outdoor Centre on Friday afternoon. Forms 5 to 8 were present as well as some of the parents of the party going to the centre this summer. As usual Torquil had the boys and girls enthralled with tales of the adventures which can be had while on the island. With some intelligent and interesting questions at the end of the hour all present learnt a lot and left desperate to get the opportunity to get out to the island. Thank you once again for entertaining the crowd Torquil and we look forward to our trip in the summer.

Form 1 - Trip to Friarton Recycling Centre

27 Jan 2011
Form 1 enjoyed an afternoon at the Friarton recycling Centre on Thursday 27th January. The sun shone for us as we walked around the ‘Web walk’. We learned a lot about what happens to our rubbish when it leaves our school. We played some games and we even had a recycling relay race! We can now confidently tell you to: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

U-13 Hockey v Belhaven Hill

26 Jan 2011
Craigclowan U-13As Hockey v Belhaven Hill (H)
Our first game of the season saw us host Belhaven Hill. This was a very encouraging display from the team and although they clearly lacked match sharpness, they all showed excellent skills and their team work was very impressive. We created lots of chances but some last ditch tackling by Belhaven and some weak finishing saw us only score one goal. In the second half, Thomas hit a fine first time shot from the top of the D to give us a narrow but very well-deserved victory.

Craigclowan U-13Bs Hockey v Belhaven Hill (A)
The boys really enjoyed themselves and produced some lovely hockey in this 3-0 victory. Special mention should be made of Jack Emslie who notched a wonderful hat-trick, but this was a whole team performance of which everyone should be proud.
A great game and the boys are looking forward to Cargilfield next.

U-11 Hockey v Belhaven Hill

26 Jan 2011
Craigclowan U-11As Hockey v Belhaven Hill (H)
With more rules sessions in the classroom than pitch sessions, due to the snow, match practice has been at a minimum. All players did a superb job at playing in a variety of positions, in order to establish a more permanent squad over the next couple of weeks. Things were simple – look up before you pass and make your team-mates look good! These two targets were certainly reached in the first half when two early crosses came in from the right and first time shots for Rob Alexander ended up in the back of the net.

The athletic ability of the squad kept them ahead as Belhaven started to tire. Fine saves from Rowan Carey, in his first game in goals, kept the score at 2-0 with the final whistle gone. Everyone is looking forward to our U-11 tournament on Saturday when there will be more chances to try out newly learned skills. Well done.

Craigclowan U-11Bs Hockey v Belhaven Hill (H)
This was the first match of the season which saw the boys gaining some much needed game time following the adverse winter weather. The game was an exciting affair and it raged from end to end. The boys in sky blue impressed as they took an early lead (Scorer: I. Gilling) following good positional play and movement. At the start of the second half Belhaven were more dynamic in their passing and were quick to level the game at 1-1. However, the spirit among the boys was good and with their determination they quickly restored the lead after good link up play (Scorer: K. Fleming). Well done boys!

Final Score: Craigclowan 2 Belhaven 1

Russian Talk (Form 6D&G)

26 Jan 2011

Today Helen MOLCHANOFF (otherwise known as Mrs Threipland) came to visit the pupils of Form 6D and 6G. The talk about Russia and the Russian language fitted perfectly within their Elementary French & European Studies as, besides English and Russian, it was mostly conducted in fluent French.
Helen gave us a rather fascinating and interactive insight into the Russian language as well as life in a much colder and bigger country (spanning over 9 time zones) than ours. Each pupil saw a transcription of his/her name in Russian before a collection of genuine fur (wolf!) coats, gloves and hats were displayed and available for our young Scots to model. Seeing clothes and books of the previous century and hearing about traditions of the former Soviet Union was captivating and we are most grateful to Helen for giving up her time and make her talk so captivating.

Burns Day

25 Jan 2011
Burns Lunch, 2011
The tradition of Burn’s Lunch continued in style this year.
The haggis followed after a lovely rib-sticking Scotch Broth. Late substitute piper, George Marlow, played bravely as he was followed round the room by Christy Wiseman, carrying the fated beast. Scots accent specialist, Jack Emslie, addressed the haggis with a mixture of sensitivity and passion. All three downed their orange squash with relish before deserved applause.

Form 1 - Tartan

25 Jan 2011
Some of our Form 1 boys proudly wore their kilts to school on Tuesday 25th to celebrate Robert Burns’ birthday. We thought they looked very smart with their school ties and jumpers.

Not forgetting the girl who joined into the spirit of the day and the Robert Burns' celebrations!

Scottish schools minors ski race at the Lecht

25 Jan 2011
Success! On what was to be a most unpleasant day in the mountains, due to the inclement weather, the boys and girls fought off the cold to perform with skill and speed. Jack Cross skied with great determination to come 3rd in a boys' field of over eighty. He should be incredibly proud of his run. It did not end there. The boys' team came in 2nd in the boys' team event. Fantastic! What a day! Oh, but it did not end there.

The girls' team also came in 2nd in the girls' team event. Amazing! Both Mrs. Whitelaw and I were incredibly proud of all that the team had achieved. Well done to all and thanks to the race organisers for all of their hard work.

Form 4 to St. Ninian's Cathedral

25 Jan 2011
This week Form 4 enjoyed a tour of St Ninian’s Cathedral in the company of the Precentor, our friend the Revd Ann Mazur. Mrs Mazur took time to explain the important features of a cathedral and kindly showed us many of its treasures too.

Craigclowan curling team update

21 Jan 2011
Craigclowan Continues to Curl
Considering that Curling requires lots of good ice, it is ironic that snow and ice have seriously affected the Perth and Kinross Schools League fixture card in recent weeks. The intrepid curlers of Craigclowan have battled on, however. Having had to postpone several league fixtures, the squad competed in the Hay Trophy in the Christmas Holiday. Members combined well to share opportunities around and learned a great deal from the experiences of playing in a tournament. The children and their parents were also very grateful to the coach of one school who took time out to give our players help and guidance in a valuable coaching session. League fixtures now become priority again and hopefully the backlog of postponed fixtures can be solved. Well done to the mums who organise the squad for matches. The school is very grateful.

Form 1 - Firefly book presentation

21 Jan 2011
Some of the children in Form 1 shared their ‘Firefly’ books on Friday. Well done to all the children who presented this week. We enjoyed some yummy muffins this week, thanks to Archie and Ewan for telling us how they made them. The book on wheels was very popular and we had a variety of interesting vehicles. We are all looking forward to some more presentations next Friday.

U-13 Netball v Kilgraston

19 Jan 2011
Our 'B' team started the afternoon’s matches off, unfortunately with a weakened side but despite losing to Kilgraston they tried very hard. The session was a good use of our time and the girls managed to get their 1st chance to play together as a team, they were beginning to gel as the match progressed and gained a few coaching tips on the way.

Our 'A' team started on an even keel with Kilgraston’s A side, again Kilgraston had the advantage over us of playing netball all of last term. We worked hard and there was some real determination from our side. At half time we were even with 13 goals all. The girls fought hard and eventually gained a very well deserved win of 18-15.

Form 2 - Visit Edinburgh Zoo

18 Jan 2011
Yesterday we went to the zoo. We saw the gentoos and king penguins. The gentoos were amazingly cute! The kings were a bit boring. We saw leopards, tigers and the golden cat. The wolverine was horrifically boring because all it did was lay there.

The sea lion was almost like a spy. The crane was evil looking! It tried to bite me!
I really liked the gentoos so it’s fair to say the gentoos were my favourite.

Yesterday we went to Edinburgh Zoo. We saw a leopard. It was prowling around. We saw a tiger. It was in its den. We saw bongos. They were amazing! We saw parrots. They were so many different colours. Next we went to the seal lion. It kept on peeping up out of the waters. Then we went to the penguins. There were kings, gentoos, and rock hoppers. The kings were enormous. We saw a lady drawing the penguins. We were looking at the tigers when we heard a noise like an ambulance’s siren. We went to the gibbons. They were making the noise! It was so loud!

Skiing at Glenshee

15 Jan 2011
Wet!! Yes I think that describes the scene rather well. Wet!! Thirty keen skiers headed off into the night for what ended up as being a short day. The snow really was not too bad considering the conditions, but the sky was heavy with the wet stuff which it dumped in large quantities onto our heads. Ten out of ten to all who ventured up to the hills as there was still much laughter and many smiles. Let’s hope it is better next weekend.

Forms 5 & 6 - Skiing for the day

ESD Debating

11 Jan 2011
The long spell of very bad weather at the end of last term meant that Heat 12 of the ESD debating competition which was due to take place at Craigclowan on 30th November was postponed until this week.

The motion was: "This House would ban boxing" and Zoe M. and Eilidh R. ('A' team) spoke first for the Proposition while Andrew J. and Fraser S. ('C' team) spoke first for the Opposition. This was a very lively debate with all teams putting forward powerful and persuasive arguments for and against a potential ban but in the end Kinross High School 'A' and Craigclowan 'C' qualified for the next round.

Form 1 - 'People who help us'

10 Jan 2011
We started our new topic ‘People Who Help Us’ with a closer look at people who help us at school.
Our first stop was the headmaster’s office. Mr Rathborne told us all the things he does at school every day. He is a very busy man. We also visited the school office and talked to Pat and Mhairi about their busy working days. We found out that they do a lot more than patch up our poorly knees! Mrs Robinson told us all about her role as the Bursar and she told us some of the big things she has to buy with the school money. The next stop was the kitchen to see the chefs, very important people. We looked at some of the big machines that they use to help feed the school every day.

Glenshee skiing

08 Jan 2011
What an amazing way to start the ski season!! The sun shone and the snow was beautiful, except for the odd little patch of ice just to keep you on your toes. Twenty boys and girls had a fantastic day on the slopes, after a slow journey up there due to another fresh fall of snow. As usual the instruction from Cairdsport was superb and by the end of the day there were some exhausted kids and staff. Let’s just hope that this is the beginning of another season like last year’s. Bring it on!!

Form 6 - Medusa masks

06 Jan 2011
Form Six Latinists created these wonderful masks after studying the story of Perseus and Medusa.
