On May
21st, 22nd and 23rd all members
of Form 5 and Form 6 took part in
an English Speaking Board Exam.
This require pupils to choose and
undertake research in a subject
in which they have a personal
interest and, using visual aids,
talk to the audience of their
classmates and the external
examiner. They also have to
answer questions on their chosen
topic, recite a poem from memory
and, finally, read aloud a
passage selected by the examiner
from a novel of their choice.
These exams are demanding and the
pupils are to be congratulated on
their hard work over the first
half of term in gathering visual
aids and preparing and memorising
their talks.
As ever, the subjects chosen for
the talks this year covered an
amazing variety of topics,
ranging from polo, snooker and
fencing to orang-utans, leopards
and frogs. In addition the
audience learned about Pasta, the
D Day Landings and Sherlock
Holmes. Amongst the more unusual
topics covered this year were the
history of the knife, fork and
spoon and Medugorje and its
growth as a place of pilgrimage.
Craigclowan pupils certainly have
a wide variety of hobbies, skills
and interests.
We firmly believe that public
speaking is a life skill from
which all our pupils benefit and
being able to address an audience
at a young age can only help
pupils in whatever career they
choose in the future.
The E. S. B. exams provide
structure and a framework for
both written and oral work
undertaken in the senior school
English classes.
We will receive the exam results
soon and hope everyone will be
well rewarded for all their hard
work! |
