11 MAY 2010

The Junior Eco-group got together on Tuesday to head up into the school garden.
On our way up to the garden we listened and looked out for any wildlife that might be attracted to Craigclowan’s gardens! We soon got to work in the garden planting a few wild flower seeds in the hope that we will attract more birds, bees and butterflies.

16 MARCH 2010

Eco Committee Tree Planting
On Tuesday of this week Tom Christian from the
Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh came to give the Eco Committee lunchtime meeting a talk on the iCONic project, which has been established to guard against rare conifer species extinction. The iCONic project has collected specimens of conifer species from all over the temperate world. These conifers will be planted throughout Perthshire and Craigclowan is the first school to be involved in this international project. The children from the Eco-Committee planted a
Chilean Plum Yew in the grounds of the school. The seed for the tree was bought over to Scotland in 2004 and took over a year to germinate, finally beginning to grow in June 2005. The tree has now reached 50 cm in height and is finally ready for its new home!

ECO ACTION DAY

23 OCTOBER 2009
The Eco-Committee held its first Eco Action Day on Friday 23rd October. The activities started in the morning with the Fairtrade team visiting each class to sell their delicious Fair Trade snacks. An assembly was led by Mrs Gloag, who told us moving stories about her experiences in Kenya and the schools and orphanage which they support. The Eco-Committee also hopes to support the Suswa Maasai Girls Refuge Centre next year by raising funds for a chicken project.
In the afternoon all pupils were then split into their Houses and each team participated in a number of eco-related and team-building activities including making bird feeders, decorating stones, gardening, finding Scottish wildlife and water carrying. Congratulations to Skye House for being the overall champions and finding the most wildlife! It was a fun afternoon which brought together the whole school.

Dear Parents,   5th October 2009
  Eco-Committee Update

After last year’s successes of being awarded both the Bronze and Silver Award by the Eco Schools organisation, this year the eco-committee has split into three groups: the Eco Group, the Fair Trade Group and the Ground Force team, in order that we can achieve all that is required to obtain the much coveted Green Flag Award.

One of these requirements is to hold an eco-event which we are planning to do on the afternoon of Friday 23rd October. This will be a whole school event and pupils will be taking part in a variety of activities relating to the environment. One of these activities will be an art and craft activity and to do this we need at least 250 empty, clean yoghurt pots. If you have any please could you send them into school with your child.

The Fair Trade group will be organising a stall of Fair Trade snacks which your child will be able to buy at morning break time and at lunch time on this day.

The Ground Force team are organising an event in the school garden. They are rather short of gardening tools and so if you have an old trowel, fork or spade which you no longer need please could you bring them into school.

As well as raising awareness about environmental issues which are specific to our local environment, the eco-committee is also wishing to establish links with a school in Kenya and to help support the Kenya Children’s Home orphanage in Nairobi. We shall be fund-raising throughout the year to raise money for children at this orphanage.

Our first fundraising event will be a jewellery recycling collection. Each child will be given an envelope to bring home on Friday 16th October into which you can put any old, broken or unwanted jewellery. Please return this envelope by Thursday 22nd October with your child’s name clearly written on the envelope as there will be a lucky draw on the 23rd October and a chance to win an MP3 player.

The eco-committee is also running a design competition. The competition is to design artwork either to go onto an environmentally friendly shopping bag or to go onto a carrier bag tidy. If you child would like to enter this competition please hand in the art work to either Mrs Dibnah or Mrs Page by Wednesday October 21st (see rules below).

The Eco-Committee would like to thank you for all your support.

Yours sincerely,

Carol Dibnah
